Abstract
Objectives£ºThis study was performed to identify attitudes toward the mentally ill patients of the non-psychiatric phy-sicians at National Medical Center in Seoul, Korea. We also intended to measure the severity of mental health problems and the priority of mental health services that perceived by the non-psychiatric physician.

Methods£ºThe Study tool was a self-report questionnaire including general characteristics, 11-item severity of mental health problems, 14-item priority of mental health services and 40-item CAMI scale. The study subject was composed of 67 non-psychiatric physicians.

Results£º1) The non-psychiatric physicians tended to take alcohol dependence, sexual abuse, adolescent delinquency and depression more seriously. however, psychosis such as schizophrenia was less significantly. 2) They believed that alcohol treatment meeting, vocational rehabilitation, family counselling, social campaign, education to be more important than either home visit or crisis intervention. 3) They showed more positive attitudes than general population, but less positive attitudes than mental health professional trainees, in all four sub-categories of CAMI scale. 4) There was no significant difference in demographic factors such as age, sex, marital status, religion and experience with the mentally ill patients in all four sub-categories of CAMI scale.

Conclusion£º We believe that further medical school education and residency training programs can change the attitudes toward the mentally ill of the non-psychiatric physicians.
